I am so tired of trying to convince people where I am from. Every local in every country believes that I am from India. (Well to be a bit fair, my sun burn lately is pretty bad)
"Where you from" they ask,
"India?" Yes they answer their own question with a question
" No, South Africa" I reply and their faces are either shocked/surprised/confused.
"But you look like you are Indian" they respond"Yes I am Indian but I am from South Africa"
"No no, but you are Indian" they insist.
Can you believe it? They are trying to convince me that I am from India, surly I know where I come from right? But they still insist that I am from India, as if I am lying to them or trying to play a joke on them. How do I convince you that I am not from India? I have never even been to India. It's so hard for them to grasp the idea that you can Indian and come from South Africa. It seems so unusual to them but for us it seems so normal, people think that there are only Africans in South Africa, not realizing just how divers our country really is, and how little they know about it.
Who knows maybe by the end of my two weeks they will have managed to convince me that I am from India and not South Africa, they do it so well.
