Listen carefully, I am about to give you the secret not just to a successful climb but to any challenge that life throws at you. It’s really simple:
ONE STEP AT A TIME!
No literally!
This is not a joke the major secret to success is ONE STEP AT A TIME!
ONE STEP AT A TIME!
No literally!
This is not a joke the major secret to success is ONE STEP AT A TIME!
For 6 Days and 40Km
ONE STEP AT A TIME,
each step, no matter how small or
how slow eventually got me to
the roof of Africa on my own two legs!
Now don’t get me wrong while I guarantee you that it’s this simple, I’m not saying it’s going to be EASY, because I can promise you that it will be anything but easy. There will be times when your feet are completely frozen to the point where you can’t feel your toes or move them, and while as simple as it is ONE STEP AT A TIME, every step will hurt, and you will be climbing at some point completely in the dark, unable to see how much further you have left to go and not knowing how far up you already are, the dark path that you take will feel endless, your body will be exhausted and you will feel like giving up is the easier option. It is at these times ONE STEP AT A TIME as simple as it seems will be extremely difficult to put into action. When you reach this stage because you will my advise to you is do not give up until the dawn breaks, and believe me as endless as the darkness may seem, the sun will rise just hang in there until it does.
“When the sun comes up you’ll get your energy back” that’s what my dad said to me when we were deciding if we going to continue to the summit or turn back.. Yes, there was a discussion of not continuing to the summit and no it was not because of altitude sickness or difficulty breathing but simply exhaustion |
And then the sun came up, and my dad’s words came alive. That sunrise and the energy it brought with it was one of the most power full things I had ever experienced. Because with the dawn comes light, and light brings hope and the ability to see how far you have actually climbed and how close you are to the top and that’s all you need. To be able to see your goal within reach will fill you with enough motivation to reach it. Nothing else matters, not even your frozen feet and hands, your mind will motivate your body to reach it’s goal you just have to hang in there and keep moving in the dark until the dawn breaks, trust me as endless as the darkness may seem, the sun will rise. |
And after the sun rose, with the peak in sight we continued our journey successfully summiting the highest mountain in Africa! After walking for 10hrs from base camp,
of which 7hrs were in complete darkness, with temperatures below 0 Degrees Celsius.
of which 7hrs were in complete darkness, with temperatures below 0 Degrees Celsius.
The secret to success: ONE STEP AT A TIME, it’s simple but it won’t be easy, what it will be however is WORTH IT!
